Those who desired food received food.
Those who needed clothing obtained clothing.
Those lacking wealth discovered abundance.
Those seeking medicine found remedies.
Those longing for happiness encountered circumstances that brought them joy.
Each being received what was most beneficial according to their needs and capacities.
In this way, Ākāśagarbha demonstrated the boundless generosity of a great bodhisattva.
Showers of Precious Jewels
Throughout the world, rains of precious jewels began to fall.
These jewels did not cause fear or destruction. Instead, they brought delight and inspiration to all who beheld them.
The jewel showers illuminated the world with countless colors and lights.
Everywhere, the atmosphere became radiant and uplifting.
The assembly recognized that these displays were not ordinary miracles but expressions of profound compassion and skillful means.
Celestial Palaces and Ornamentation
Magnificent celestial palaces appeared throughout the sky.
These structures were adorned with precious gems, golden decorations, and countless ornaments of extraordinary beauty.
Their brilliance illuminated every direction.
From these celestial mansions came music of incomparable sweetness.
The sounds filled the world without causing distraction or attachment. Instead, they inspired recollection of the Dharma and deepened the faith of those who heard them.
A Rain of Flowers
Divine flowers began to descend from the heavens.
The flowers covered the earth in beautiful patterns and emitted delightful fragrances.
Their colors were vivid and their appearance exquisite.
The entire world seemed transformed into a sacred offering.
Those present experienced profound joy simply by witnessing the display.
The Assembly’s Wonder
The gathered bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, devas, nāgas, and countless other beings were filled with amazement.
They had witnessed many extraordinary events in the presence of the Buddha, yet this display surpassed anything they had previously seen.
Many wondered how such a manifestation could occur.
Others reflected upon the immense merit and realization required to produce such effects.
All recognized that Ākāśagarbha possessed qualities far beyond ordinary comprehension.
The Appearance of the Great Lotus Throne
Then an enormous lotus appeared.
It was vast beyond imagination and adorned with countless precious jewels.
Its petals radiated brilliant light throughout the world.
The lotus possessed every mark of perfection and seemed to embody purity itself.
Upon this magnificent lotus throne appeared the bodhisattva Ākāśagarbha.
His presence illuminated all directions.
His body radiated immeasurable light.
His appearance inspired devotion, confidence, and wonder in all who beheld him.
Maitreya’s Question
Witnessing these astonishing events, the bodhisattva Maitreya rose from his seat and addressed Bhaiṣajyarāja.
He expressed his amazement at the immense display that had accompanied Ākāśagarbha’s arrival.
How could a bodhisattva produce such transformations?
What was the purpose behind these extraordinary manifestations?
What deeper meaning lay beneath these miraculous appearances?
Maitreya wished to understand not merely the display itself, but the wisdom and compassion from which it arose.
The Nature of Skillful Means
In response, it was explained that great bodhisattvas do not manifest wonders merely to impress beings.
Their displays arise from compassion.
They appear in forms that inspire faith.
They create circumstances that remove suffering.
They provide what beings need in order to approach the Dharma.
What may seem miraculous from an ordinary perspective is, for a bodhisattva, simply another method of benefiting living beings.
The transformation of worlds, the healing of illnesses, the fulfillment of wishes, and the manifestation of celestial beauty are all expressions of skillful means.
Their purpose is not spectacle but liberation.
Ultimate Reality and Compassionate Activity
Although bodhisattvas realize that all phenomena are empty and devoid of inherent existence, they do not withdraw from the world.
Instead, they employ countless methods to benefit others.
Because they understand ultimate reality, they are free to engage with conventional reality without attachment.
Thus, displays such as those manifested by Ākāśagarbha arise effortlessly.
They are neither rooted in grasping nor motivated by personal gain.
They are spontaneous expressions of wisdom united with compassion.
Why Great Bodhisattvas Manifest Miracles
The purpose of such displays is to mature beings according to their capacities.
Some beings are inspired through teachings.
Others are inspired through acts of generosity.
Still others are inspired by witnessing extraordinary manifestations that awaken faith and wonder.
Great bodhisattvas understand these differences.
They therefore employ countless methods suited to the needs of each individual.
For this reason, Ākāśagarbha’s display transformed the entire world.
It relieved suffering, inspired devotion, strengthened faith, and prepared the assembly to receive deeper teachings.
Thus, what appeared as a magnificent miracle was in truth an act of boundless compassion.
The assembly listened with deep attention.
Having witnessed the arrival of Ākāśagarbha and the transformation of the world itself, they now understood that every aspect of the display had been performed solely for the welfare of living beings.
