The Inconceivable Qualities of Ākāśagarbha

The Buddha Praises Ākāśagarbha

After the extraordinary vision had subsided and the assembly regained its ordinary perception, the Buddha began to reveal the qualities of the bodhisattva Ākāśagarbha.

He described Ākāśagarbha as possessing virtues so vast and profound that they could only be explained through a series of comparisons.

His meditative concentration is like a great ocean—deep, immeasurable, and unfathomable.

His training is like Mount Meru—stable, immovable, and majestic.

His primordial wisdom is like space itself—boundless and unobstructed.

His diligence is like the wind—unceasing and powerful.

His patience is like a vajra—indestructible and unwavering.

Among bodhisattvas, he stands like a supreme victory banner, distinguished by his accomplishments and qualities.

A Guide for All Who Seek Liberation

For those journeying toward nirvāṇa, Ākāśagarbha is like a skilled captain guiding travelers safely across dangerous waters.

For those seeking virtue, he is a treasury filled with inexhaustible riches.

For the suffering, he is like a wish-fulfilling vase that provides exactly what is needed.

For beings lost in darkness, he is like the sun that illuminates the world.

For those who have lost their way, he is like the moon that guides travelers through the night.

For those gripped by fear, he is as steady and reassuring as Mount Meru itself.

Medicine for the Afflictions

The Buddha declared that Ākāśagarbha is like a supreme medicinal elixir for beings afflicted by the illnesses of greed, hatred, and delusion.

For those who have exhausted their roots of virtue and fallen from the path, he is like a walking stick supporting one who can no longer walk alone.

He provides strength to those who have become spiritually exhausted and direction to those who have lost their way.

No matter how far someone has strayed, Ākāśagarbha remains a source of support and renewal.

A Friend to Every Being

The Buddha continued by describing how Ākāśagarbha appears differently according to the needs of those he helps.

For those who make garlands, he is like a beautiful flower.

For those who uphold vows, he is like a spotless mirror reflecting their conduct.

For those endowed with modesty and conscientiousness, he is like fine clothing that protects and adorns.

For travelers journeying toward liberation, he is like a bridge spanning a difficult crossing.

For those seeking the farther shore of awakening, he is like a sturdy boat.

For beings aspiring to higher states of existence, he is like a staircase leading upward.

Protector and Defender

For those who endure criticism, insult, or slander, Ākāśagarbha is like a protective parasol.

For those confronted by opposition and adversity, he is like a fearless lion.

For those struggling against the forces of Māra, he is like a suit of armor.

For practitioners who have become confused regarding ethical discipline, he is like the opening of their eyes.

Just as the earth supports all harvests, Ākāśagarbha supports the growth of all virtuous qualities.

Provider of Every Need

The Buddha further explained that Ākāśagarbha appears according to the needs of each individual.

To the sick, he is like a physician.

To the hungry, he is like nourishing grain.

To the thirsty, he is like pure water.

To the weary, he is like a comfortable bed.

To those absorbed in meditation, he is like a fire lens that ignites deeper realization.

To those entering the path of awakening, he is like a chariot carrying them toward their destination.

To those seeking rest and joy, he is like a beautiful park filled with refreshing pools.

To those striving toward enlightenment, he is like a rosary that supports continuous practice and recollection.

The Fulfillment of the Perfections

The Buddha then described Ākāśagarbha as the very embodiment of the perfection of the bodhisattva path.

For those dwelling on the tenth bodhisattva ground, he is like a wish-fulfilling jewel.

For those who have attained the meditative concentration known as Valiant Progress, he is like a wish-fulfilling tree that grants every noble aspiration.

His presence encourages and strengthens the highest stages of spiritual development.

The Destroyer of Wrong Views

For those trapped in harmful beliefs, Ākāśagarbha acts like a powerful weapon that cuts through confusion.

For beings bound by deep-rooted habits and latent tendencies, he is like a vajra that shatters the chains of ignorance.

The Buddha declared that even the hosts of Māra cannot overcome him.

His wisdom and compassion are beyond their reach.

Support for Gods, Humans, and All Beings

For those who rely upon skillful means, Ākāśagarbha serves as a guide and measure.

For wisdom itself, he is discernment.

For the entire Buddhadharma, he is a great dwelling place.

For pratyekabuddhas, he is like a garland.

For śrāvakas, he is like a monastic robe.

For the gods, he is like an eye.

For human beings, he is like a path.

For animals, he is a shelter.

For pretas, he is a support.

For beings suffering in the hell realms, he is a protector.

Wherever beings are found, Ākāśagarbha provides exactly what is needed.

Minister to the Buddhas

The Buddha proclaimed that for all the tathāgatas of the past, present, and future, Ākāśagarbha serves like a trusted minister.

He is the gatekeeper of the City of Dharma.

He possesses the wisdom of the buddhas adorned with all excellent qualities, including the eighteen unique qualities of a fully awakened being.

Because of these extraordinary virtues, the Buddha declared that all beings—except the tathāgatas themselves—should honor and worship Ākāśagarbha with the highest offerings.

The Assembly Prepares to Welcome Him

The Buddha then instructed the gathering to receive Ākāśagarbha with every form of respect.

They were to honor him with jeweled parasols, victory banners, flags, flowers, incense, garlands, perfumes, celestial garments, ornaments, and precious vessels.

They were encouraged to praise him, adorn his path, and venerate him with sincere devotion.

By honoring Ākāśagarbha in this way, the Buddha explained, they would gradually cultivate qualities similar to his own and become worthy vessels of the Dharma.

Filled with joy, every member of the assembly rose from their seats.

Their hearts overflowed with delight.

Smiling with admiration and joining their palms in reverence, they turned their gaze toward the approaching bodhisattva.

Bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and great seers alike shared the same thought:

“What magnificent offering shall we prepare for this extraordinary being?”
